Coverage

Umbrella & Excess Liability

Adds higher limits over your general liability, auto and employer's liability when a contract or a severe claim calls for more.

In plain language

Umbrella and excess policies sit on top of your primary policies (general liability, auto and employer's liability, sometimes professional liability) and pay once those limits are used up.

They're the most cost-effective way to meet contracts that ask for $5M or more, and they protect against the rare but catastrophic claim, such as a serious auto accident by an employee driving between visits.

Typically covers

  • Additional limits above GL, auto and employer's liability
  • Some claims not covered by underlying policies (true umbrella forms)
  • Defense costs (often outside the limit)

Usually not covered

  • Anything excluded by both the umbrella and underlying policies
  • Professional liability unless specifically scheduled

Coverage depends on the policy form, endorsements and exclusions. We confirm the details in writing before you buy.

FAQ

Umbrella / Excess questions

What's the difference between umbrella and excess?

Excess follows the terms of the underlying policy and simply adds limit. A true umbrella can also cover some claims the underlying policy doesn't. Both are common; the right one depends on your contracts and exposures.
